Hermanus is a cozy little costal Village about 60 miles SE of Cape Town. Hermanus is most known for being one of the top 4 whale viewing locations in the world. Primarily due to the large number of Southern Right whales that mate here in late spring to sumner. Unfortunately I missed them by about a month. I could still get dropped in a cage among a bunch of great white shsrks, but I think I'll pass on that.

For those of you familiar with the PNW Hermanus is somewhat reminiscent of an Edmonds or Friday Harbor.

Hermanus was originally going to be my first stop because it seemed low-key and a good place to get adjusted from travel, but I later decided it would be better to settle just a half hour from the airport the first night than make the trek out here coming right off the plane.

A couple of other fun Hermanus facts. It's original name was once 'Hermanuspietersfontein' until the Post Office shortened it due to either irtitation or sympathy for anyone sending mail here.

Hermanus is also home to the Hermanus Magnetic Observatory. The HMO is part of the worldwide network that monitors variations in the Earth's magnetic field.
