Driving on the Left Revelations

This is the first time I've driven a car in a country where they drive on the left side of the road. After a few days here are my observations. I may augment these over the next few days if I discover additional nuances.

  1. The actual driving part is not that hard. Just play follow the leader. This did admittedly get me in trouble once when going through a construction detour. I turned because everyone in front of me did, but I really wanted to go straight.

  2. Be extra careful when there is no leader.

  3. Its the stuff inside the car that messes with me because everything is opposite.

  4. After two days, I've yet to get into the driver's side without opening the passenger's side first expecting the steering wheel to be there.

  5. 98% of the time when intending to signal a lane shift or turn I turn on the windshield wipers first.

  6. Thank the heavens my rental is an automatic. Shifting with my left hand...no thank you.

  7. Here is the most amazing thing to me. Have you noticed while negotiating oncoming pedestrians on narrow sidewalks or hiking trails in North America we natually move to our right? They move to the left here 🤯
